For the Universal Church
A Message from Bishop Malloy:
Dear Friends in Christ,
Our Catholic sisters, brothers and priests in religious orders have answered the call to teach, evangelize, guide, and protect those who are lost in our world and thirsting for the word of God. Now, these individuals are in need of our help.
The urgent call to evangelize surrounds the nature of the National
Appeal, for we are assisting the Church’s efforts in spreading the Good
News. For instance, we must not forget our wonderful religious sisters,
brothers and priests who have given their lives to spread the Gospel
Message. By participating in the Retirement Fund for Religious and Rockford Diocesan Priests’ Pension, we honor their service and zeal for Christ. Through the Catholic Communication Campaign, the Church broadcasts our faith to all areas of our country. Evangelizing is not just a matter of words, it includes outreach to the poor helped by the work of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Our support of the Catholic University of America stresses our commitment to Catholic values in education. For the Catholic elementary schools in our Diocese, we have created a special opportunity for you to assist grade schools that have operating deficits and need your help to become financially viable.
I would encourage you to join this effort. Please offer generously what you can for the annual
National Appeal collection on the weekend of January 21st and 22nd to help promote the Gospel
through these worthy causes.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
The Most Reverend David J. Malloy
Bishop of Rockford
The National Appeal Supports:
Retirement Fund for Religious (RFR)
Traditionally, women and men religious worked for small stipends that furnished only the basics of daily living. As a result, a majority of religious communities now lack adequate savings for retirement. At the same time, the cost of care continues to increase, especially as older religious both outnumber younger religious and are living longer. In 1988, Catholic Bishops of the United States launched the Retirement Fund for Religious (RFR) to address the significant lack of retirement funding for Catholic sisters, brothers, and priests in religious orders. With your help, the Diocese distributed $184,078.
